HSL Continues To Award Swinburne’s Best Civil Engineering Students

KUCHING: Sarawak-based marine engineering and infrastructure specialist, Hock Seng Lee Bhd (HSL) presented Best Graduate Award 2019 and Best Student Awards to Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus’ (Swinburne Sarawak) outstanding civil engineering students recently.
HSL’s executive director, Simon Lau Kiing Kang who presented the Best Graduate Award at Swinburne’s Alumni and Partners Appreciation Dinner on 22 October explained that the industry awards were part of the company’s continual collaboration with Swinburne Sarawak to encourage academic excellence and advancement in education within the community
Lau also presented the Best Student Award to another four recipients at Swinburne’s Career Development Conference held separately at its campus a week later.
“The shortlisted candidates went through a series of selection interviews with HSL before they were conferred the award. Aside from their impressive academic transcripts, these students have shown remarkable confidence in their communication skills during the interviews. We hope that this will encourage them to continue to excel as they prepare for their entry into the working industry,” Lau said.
According to Lau, HSL hopes to increase similar collaborations with higher education institutions to attract and retain new talents.
“We believe that investing in the younger generations is a global priority. Therefore, we hope that through these CSR initiatives, HSL will be able to play a more effective role in preparing these students for the future workplace. The awards are meant to honour their efforts and encourage them do better when they become contributing adults in the labour market.
“HSL is at the forefront of innovation and emerging technologies in construction and engineering and we believe that through these collaborations with Swinburne, we are able to do our part in motivating the students for the industry. They are always welcome to build their career with us after they graduate,” he said.
The best graduate award 2019 was conferred to Kenny Hii Jun Hao, who has achieved academic excellence in Bachelor of Civil Engineering. The year 3 and year 2 students who received the Best Student Awards from HSL at their campus were Alton Chiam Tat Hua, Low Hong Shen, Wee Boon Hao and Chong Zhuang Ping.
Swinburne Sarawak campus has produced more than 6,200 graduates since its first graduation in 2004, many of whom are currently working with HSL.
In his welcoming speech, Swinburne Sarawak’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer, Professor John Wilson thanked the industry partners for their contributions in developing students in their respective field of specialization through internships, engagements of students in actual company projects as well as offering scholarship awards and bursaries.
